What’s changing

Previously available as part of the Google Workspace Developer Preview Program, we're excited to announce that the ability for developers to build Google Chat apps using the Workspace add-on framework is now generally available.

The Workspace add-ons framework makes it possible to build and maintain one app that works across multiple Workspace apps including Gmail, Calendar, Drive, and Chat. This reduces complexity and improves the experience for developers, system admins, and end-users.

In Chat, Workspace add-ons can provide helpful features, such as:
  • Previewing links from Chat messages and taking action without leaving the conversation.
  • Automating tasks across Google Workspace applications.
  • Receiving  alerts or notifications from linked external services.
  • Combining external data from 3rd party apps and services with your data from Gmail, Chat, and Calendar.

Additional details

Lucid, developers of Lucidchart, Lucidspark, and Lucidscale, recently updated their existing Workspace Add-ons to now support Chat. These integrations with Google Chat enable link previews, quick search, and access management all within Chat.

See more details on the Lucidchart, Lucidspark, and Lucidscale integrations here.

Soon, other partners, including Asana, Confluence, Figma, HubSpot, Miro, Polly, ServiceNow, Trello, 1Password, and more will be releasing Chat apps built on the Workspace add-ons framework.

Last year, we made updates to the Google Chat integration with GitHub, a cloud-based platform that enables users to store, share and collaborate with others to write code. Today, we’re excited to announce additional updates and functionality that improve upon the overall experience using the GitHub app for Google Chat.

Starting today, users will have the ability to:
  • Choose from additional controls for repository notification subscriptions, allowing users to set notifications according to their needs. For example, users can subscribe only to notifications when a deployment fails, or set notifications for Pull Requests assigned only to a particular individual.
  • Create scheduled reminders, providing a new way for teams to stay on top of open pull requests.
  • Set personal reminders to help keep track of pull requests that require review.

Earlier this year, we introduced the ability for users to easily summarize Google Docs, Slides, and Sheets files shared within a Google Chat conversation. Today, we’re excited to expand this feature to PDF, Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), CSV, txt, and zip files shared as Drive links in Chat.

Simply click the new “Summarize this file” button that appears within the respective file preview card in the conversation, and Gemini will summarize the file so you can get a quick overview without having to leave Chat.

What’s changing

Last year, we introduced Comeen for Google Chat, a third-party app that helps users effortlessly manage workplace resources by enabling them to confirm or release meeting rooms and desks via real-time notifications within Google Chat.

Today, we’re excited to announce the next evolution of the Comeen app: the Workplace AI Agent. This powerful assistant uses generative AI to help users complete key workplace actions using natural language. From bookings to workplace knowledge, everything happens in seconds through simple prompts. For example, users can:
  • Book workplace resources (workstations, meeting rooms). By asking the Comeen app to book a space, it will find the most suitable resource based on your building, capacity needs, and preferences. For example, you can type:
    • “Book a desk for tomorrow”
    • “Book a desk with a dual screen”
    • “Book a room at 2pm for 8 people with a Google Meet Hardware”
  • Answer workplace or building-related questions. When you ask about your workspace or colleagues, you will get contextual answers tailored to your organization’s configuration and your individual context. For example, you can ask:
    • “Which rooms are available now?”
    • “Is Room New York free tomorrow at 3pm?”
    • “Where can I print on the 3rd floor?”

Chat apps can now create spaces with their own identity using the Google Chat API
Last year, we introduced a feature through the Google Workspace Developer Preview Program that enables Chat apps to create spaces and memberships - using application identity - via the Google Chat API. Your users can now express interest in upgrading their Google Workspace subscription
We’re introducing a simple way for Workspace end users to request an upgraded edition of Google Workspace from their admins. To send this request, Workspace end users will see a path to request an upgraded Workspace edition including additional Gemini features when they interact with Gemini, such as with the Gemini icon displayed across Workspace apps. This interaction will provide an end user a path to complete a request form for an upgraded Workspace edition. Super admins will receive this request by email, and from there they can choose to upgrade their Workspace subscription directly in the Admin console. | Admins can disable these requests at any time in the Admin console by going to Account > Account Settings > Gemini for Google Workspace, and deselecting the ‘User-requested upgrades’ setting — use this article in our Help Center for more information. | Please note this is only available for customers in the US and India with fewer than 300 licenses. | Rolling out now to Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains. | Learn more about Gemini for Workspace, including our recent Gemini for Workspace announcements.

What’s changing

Last year, we announced that Gemini in Google Chat can now help you catch up on unread conversations in the Chat home view with summaries. Recently, we extended this ability to direct messages and read conversations.

Upon navigating to a conversation in home, click the “Summarize” button to see a quick, bulleted synopsis of the message content. This enables you to quickly review recent activity across all active conversations to determine where best to focus your time and attention.

Today, we’re excited to announce that summaries in the home view are now available in three additional languages:
  • Spanish
  • Portuguese
  • German

Why it matters

Since introducing a more streamlined user experience in Chat to help you find what you need much faster, we’re adding more ways to help you prioritize the most important conversations. This new summaries in home feature does just that by helping you catch up more quickly.
